Bike to Swan Island? Yikes! Can I do it safely?
The answer is YES!
City of Portland bike routes on Denver Avenue, Skidmore Street,
Willamette Boulevard and Greeley Avenue will get you to Swan
Island’s main drag, Going Street.
Check out the bike lanes on Interstate Avenue and be sure to contact
the TMA for several “off map” bike routes to Swan Island!
On Going Street and the Swan Island roadway network, the Swan
Island TMA recommends use of the sidewalk. This is legal and at
least during peak hours with trucks and anxious commuters, the
place to be. Be sure to watch for pedestrians and vehicles
turning in and out of driveways.
Going Street
Getting down the Going Street sidewalk to Swan Island by bike
has gotten better! Extensive brush removal has got it back
to 8’ wide, and faulty sidewalk sections have been replaced.
New sidewalks and crossings at Basin Avenue & Wygant, the
Greeley ramp to Going Street and Going & Basin make the
trip between Interstate Avenue and Swan Island safer and more
pleasant.
These improvements were funded by the City of
Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services’ Westside CSO
project.
Remember, bikes are permitted on TriMet buses and MAX trains. No
permit required!

Do people actually WALK on Swan Island?
YES and some walk to it as well!
Swan Island has a great section of the North Willamette Greenway
Trail; with the opening of the Swan Island Pump Station segment
the Trail is now over one
mile of landscaped, paved walkway along the working Willamette.
It is the only access to the River between St Johns and the
Steel Bridge! Its got ships, wildlife and a sunny southern
exposure!
Signalized crosswalks are provided at Basin & Anchor, Lagoon &
Anchor, Channel & Anchor and now at Going and Port Center Way.
Further north on Basin, signalized crossings are at Emerson and
Leverman. Though the sidewalk network has gaps, access is
possible to almost the entire industrial area on foot.
A new sidewalk along Port Center Way provides better pedestrian access from Going
Street to the new Pump Station segment of the Greenway Trail.
If you live iin Overlook Neighborhood or take the TriMet 35 Greeley or
72 Killingsworth, these improvements will make the walk to Swan
Island that much better.
Go to "Projects" to learn about the Waud Bluff Trail, that will
connect Swan Island to the University Park neighborhood and all
of North Portland.
